Well, who saw that coming? The FA Cup is coming home to the red half of Manchester and here are the Manchester United player ratings vs Man City.
In what was comfortably the best performance under Erik ten Hag and perhaps the best for the club full-stop in years, Manchester United defeated neighbours Manchester City 2-1 to end the season on a high.
Teenage duo Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo grabbed the goals in a first half in which a disciplined and deadly United completely knocked City off their stride.
It was a back-to-the-walls performance in the second half and Jeremy Doku squeezed the ball home late on to set up a tense final stretch but United held on to lift the FA Cup for a 13th time.
Here’s how the players rated with one unexpected name getting a 10/10.
Andre Onana – 7
Some nervy moments in possession but dealt with most of the danger that came his way comfortably, with two great saves from rasping Kyle Walker drives especially.
Should have done miles better with Doku’s goal that he allowed to sneak in at the near post but Andre Onana’s long balls over the top to the on-rushing forwards were a constant threat City struggled with.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 7
Aaron Wan-Bissaka had little trouble in the first half but had the much trickier task of dealing with Jeremy Doku in the second. Yet, other than a couple of occasions, he managed to deal with the rapid and skilful winger handily.
Raphael Varane – 9
In his last game for United, Raphael Varane might have made everyone reconsider that decision with a towering performance.
The Frenchman was alert to all the danger that came his way and dealt with it without any fuss. A colossus at the back.
Lisandro Martinez – 8
You notice just how much United have missed Lisandro Martinez when he’s back in the team and it’s such a shame the partnership with Varane was non-existent this season because it’s brilliant.
The Argentine hurried and harried Erling Haaland throughout, hardly giving him a sniff, and made the back line better by orders of magnitude. Winding up Walker on the way out with another good touch.
Martinez Lasted 71 minutes in his second start since February and United can only hope he’s back to full fitness next season.
Diogo Dalot – 8
A calm presence at the back as he confidently got on the ball and helped United build out in possession. It was his fantastic cross-field pass that led to the opening goal.
Defensively, Diogo Dalot marshalled compatriot Bernardo Silva well and nullified the playmaker’s impact.
Kobbie Mainoo – 9
A crucial interception in the box when the game was still goalless and a composed finish to double his side’s lead after ghosting in the box were just two highlights of an unreal performance.
Kobbie Mainoo put in a disciplined display in which he wasn’t as flashy on the ball but was instead full of grit and heart that helped keep United compact and solid in the middle.
Sofyan Amrabat – 10
With a performance like that, you have to wonder why Sofyan Amrabat hasn’t had more opportunities this season.
Mainoo and the Morrocan have been the best midfield partnership in their few games together, with both benefitting from the other.
This was quite comfortably Amrabat’s best game for the club in what will likely be his last.
He hustled and bustled in the middle, suffocating City’s midfielders, winning the ball back repeatedly and playing the simple pass as well as marshalling his teammates in a strong leadership display.
It was his proactiveness to win possession that led to the opener and he was the driving force behind the shock victory.
Alejandro Garnacho – 8
Did so well to anticipate and capitalise on Josko Gvardiol’s mistake to tap into an empty net for the first goal.
A constant danger on the right, Alejandro Garnacho was unfortunate to see one assist chalked off but would not be deterred as he was crucial in the second that was allowed moments later.
Scott McTominay – 7
One risky pass that he got away with aside, this was another energetic display from Scott McTominay as he was constantly pushing United up the pitch with powerful runs through the middle of the park.
Also aided in drowning out City’s creative forces.
Marcus Rashford – 7
Worked really hard against the lightning-quick Kyle Walker and his constant stretching of the City back-line is what unsettled the Blues so thoroughly. Scored but it was correctly ruled out for off-side.
Bruno Fernandes – 9
It was a pleasure to watch Bruno Fernandes’ all-action performance, which was inventive and industrious in equal measure.
His sublime shuffled pass for Mainoo’s goal was the highlight but there were countless great touches and movements. As ever, he worked tirelessly going backwards as well.
Substitutes
Jonny Evans – 7
Came on into the fire but kept his cool and defended well.
Rasmus Hojlund – 7
Dug in deep to help United over the line by holding the ball up, winning fouls and clearing the danger in his own box.
Mason Mount – 7
Tidy on the ball after coming on in the final few minutes.
Victor Lindelof – 7
Did what he needed to do.
