Manchester United are FA Cup winners once again having defied the odds to beat Manchester City 2-1 at Wembley Stadium.
Few were backing United to win the FA Cup amid question marks surrounding Erik ten Hag’s future at the club.
From United’s disappointing season to the two defeats to City this season and even losing to City in last season’s FA Cup final, Ten Hag’s men didn’t have much public backing.
There was plenty of belief inside the United dressing room though and that showed with a sensational first-half performance.
Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo have been United’s youthful exuberance all season long and they stepped up to establish a 2-0 lead.
United battled brilliantly and restricted City through the first period but were given a late scare as Jeremy Doku pulled one back for City.
United held firm and saw out the victory, securing a 13th FA Cup in the process whilst giving United fans something to shout about after a turbulent campaign.
David De Gea reacts to Manchester United win
This is the kind of performance United fans have wanted to see on a consistent basis.
Strong, solid, courageous, dangerous going forward – everything supporters want to see.
Everybody connected with United will be buzzing with Saturday’s victory and that even includes former goalkeeper David De Gea.
The Spaniard still holds United close to his heart despite leaving the club last year and has now taken to social media to react to the FA Cup final win.
De Gea tweeted just seven words – ‘Manchester is and always will be red’.
City have been the Premier League’s team to beat in recent times but De Gea is in no doubt over who Manchester really belongs to, especially after this final display.
De Gea tasted defeat in last season’s FA Cup final, his last appearance in a United shirt after 12 years at the club.
Still a free agent, De Gea will have absolutely loved seeing his former club flip the script and come away from Wembley with another trophy win.
Andre Onana display
De Gea will have been paying close attention to the performance of United goalkeeper Andre Onana – the man who replaced him at Old Trafford.
Onana certainly could have done better with Doku’s goal back for City, allowing a shot to squirm past him at the near post.
The Cameroonian did well for most of the game though, making three saves to keep City at bay.
Onana also did well on crosses, facing corners which were put right on top of him but dealing with them admirably.
De Gea will surely have been pleased with Onana’s performance as the United stopper played his part in defeating City and ending the season on a major high.
