Leny Yoro has named one of the biggest inspirations for his career so far and Manchester United have just released him.

Manchester United have had an usually competent and assured start to the summer transfer window by already securing two of their top targets.

Erik ten Hag has added towering forward Joshua Zirkzee to his attacking ranks while teenage starlet Leny Yoro has been bought for £52m to strengthen the back-line.

United edged out Real Madrid to win the race for the highly-sought after Yoro and the 18-year-old could make his debut in Saturday’s pre-season friendly against Rangers after being named in the travelling squad.

Ahead of making his bow for the club, United’s newest signing has revealed Raphael Varane has been a huge ‘inspiration’ during his career.

Leny Yoro names Raphael Varane as his favourite French United player

When asked by United’s official X account who his favourite French star to have played at Old Trafford is, Yoro replied: “Let’s say, Rapha Varane, he is a top defender.”

“He didn’t play long time here but he’s an inspiration for me. A really top defender.”

Sadly for Yoro, he has missed out on the chance of playing alongside Varane as he was released by United following the expiration of his contract this summer.

The veteran centre-back is expected to join Italian side Como on a free transfer.

Yoro also detailed his conversation with United legend Rio Ferdinand. He added: “I had the chance to meet him and he’s a really nice guy, a top defender.

“I just called him but I hope to meet him soon. I already spoke with him and he’s a really nice guy.

“Not today, during the transfer market. He helped me a lot to make my choice. He explained to me how big United are. So yeah, it was really good for me.”

Leny Yoro has got some big boots to fill

As well as following in the footsteps of compatriot Varane to United, Yoro has big boots to fill, or rather a huge shirt.

It has been confirmed that Yoro will wear the No.15 at United, a shirt made famous by iconic captain Nemanja Vidic.

If Yoro can get to even half the level of the beloved Serbian, then United’s hefty transfer fee will look like a bargain.
