Manchester United had two youngsters involved for England U18s as they defeated Northern Ireland on Wednesday night.
It was a remarkable season for the Manchester United U18s as they impressively won the treble of the PL Cup, U18 Premier League North and U18 Premier League national champions.
The success of the group has already seen rewards handed to some of the many wonderkids who are in the academy right now.
No player has been rewarded more than top goalscorer Ethan Wheatley as he’s been making senior appearances and also won the Jimmy Murphy Player of the Year award.
Wheatley was in action for England U18s on Wednesday along with Elyh Harrison, here’s how they got on.
How did Ethan Wheatley and Elyh Harrison fare for England?
The two United sensations both started England U18s game on Wednesday against Northern Ireland in a game which ended 4-2.
Wheatley was on the scoresheet for England as he scored the third goal for The Young Lions in a first-half rout which looked like becoming a cricket score.
It is just the latest goal for Wheatley in a season which has seen him shoot right into the limelight at Carrington and looks like an interesting prospect whom we expect to find a loan this summer.
Wheatley wasn’t the only United player on the pitch either as Elyh Harrison joined him and will be frustrated to have conceded twice to Northern Ireland, although the official England match report states he made a “strong save” to deny his opponents.
Harrison should get another chance this Sunday against Morocco to end his campaign.
Ethan Wheatley continues to shine and Manchester United will be delighted
Despite always being an exciting talent, Wheatley hasn’t always been considered as a player destined to be in the first team.
With that being said, this season has seen this change as he’s become an absolute goal machine, scoring 23 goals across the youth levels and has quite clearly caught Ten Hag’s eye as he’s made a handful of cameo appearances.
Labelled as ‘exceptional’ recently, Wheatley deserved every bit of praise he gets and has a bright future at the club.
After such a lethal campaign in which he scored with ease at both U21 and U18 levels, another season playing academy football wouldn’t be ideal for him, so a loan must be found, but a smart one where he can shine.
