Manchester United are considering an interesting alternative to Manuel Ugarte in their hunt for a new defensive midfielder this summer, according to reports.

It’s been an uncharacteristically strong start to the transfer window for Manchester United, who have already signed two promising young talents.

Powerhouse striker Joshua Zirkzee has come in from Bologna while United have also beaten out Real Madrid to the signature of highly-rated centre-back Leny Yoro.

Erik ten Hag is looking to rejuvenate his side after last season’s disaster which saw their lowest Premier League finish ever.

The FA Cup triumph over Manchester City earned him another chance and the club are certainly backing him in the market.

Now another defensive midfielder is the top priority, with Paris Saint Germain’s Manuel Ugarte top of the list.

However, reports suggest United are also looking at alternatives like Martin Zubimendi.

Manchester United considering Martin Zubimendi as Manuel Ugarte alternative

According to a report from The Telegraph, talks with Ugarte ‘appear the most advanced’ in United’s quest to reinforce a trouble position.

The Uruguayan only made his big-money move to PSG a year ago but struggled to make a strong impression in the French capital.

Yet, Ugarte clearly has talent and would bring the solid midfield qualities lacking at Old Trafford.

If United can’t sign the 23-year-old, there are alternatives in mind with it being reported ‘there is some interest’ in Real Sociedad’s Zubimendi.

The Spaniard replaced the injured Rodri in the Euro 2024 final and put in a fantastic performance to help his country defeat England.

Free agent Adrien Rabiot and even a permanent move for Sofyan Amrabat are also mentioned as possible additions.

What should United’s next transfer priority be?

It’s almost unsettling to see United go about their business without fuss and drama, just identifying exciting targets and signing them without a drawn-out saga.

Two positions that were in desperate need of attention have been addressed and it seems it won’t be long before the most important, centre-midfield, is too.

What does the club need to prioritise next, though? Another centre-back appears to be on the cards in either Matthijs de Ligt or Jarrad Branthwaite.

After that, a new full-back should definitely be brought in. Luke Shaw missed most of last season through injury and Tyrell Malacia did.

Another quality option at left-back is an absolute must.
