Sir Alex Ferguson perfectly outlined an important transfer rule that he followed after speaking with a former England manager at the peak of his Manchester United powers.
The 82-year-old legendary former Manchester United manager called it time on an illustrious spell in the Old Trafford dugout in 2013.
Sir Alex Ferguson led the Red Devils to 13 Premier League titles, including United’s last league triumph at the end of the 2012-13 season.
The iconic Scot is widely regarded as one of the best managers of all time after his impact with United in England and with Aberdeen in Scotland.
Ferguson maintained his dominance at the top of English football with United, despite challenges from rivals like Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho.
The United legend was well known for wanting to improve and overhaul his squads and built several legendary teams during his time at Old Trafford.
Ferguson wanted the best in class and brought a roster of talented players to United, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand.
Despite his legendary reputation and stature, Ferguson also missed out on bringing iconic former players to Old Trafford and also endured flop signings at the club.
Man Utd legend Ferguson’s important rule
Speaking on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast, Sam Allardyce opened up about an important piece of advice he received from Sir Alex Ferguson.
The former England boss crossed paths with Ferguson when he was a Premier League manager and was all too familiar with the Scot’s incredible tactics.
Sam Allardyce revealed that he had spoken with the former Manchester United manager when he was at the “height” of his powers at Old Trafford.
According to the former West Ham manager, Ferguson told Allardyce to “never” buy a player in the aftermath of a major international tournament.
Allardyce revealed that Ferguson felt that clubs end up with more ‘flop’ signings after international competitions due to the “inflated prices” being put on transfers.
“One thing you don’t do – and this is not me, this is Sir Alex [Ferguson] when I spoke to him at his height at Manchester United – never buy a player after an international competition,” he said, as per The Daily Express.
“Because they normally let you down more than anybody else.
“Everybody speculates about somebody that’s stood out at the Euros or World Cup. [Ferguson] said, ‘The amount of flops that happen when a board’s bought [a player based on] that tournament into the football club at inflated prices.”
Allardyce echoes Ferguson’s transfer sentiments
Allardyce claimed that major tournaments like the Euros are an opportunity for players to put themselves out there and “impress” clubs in the Premier League.
“A lot of players will want to go into the Euros and impress to try and get to the Premier League,” he added.
“Unless you’re already with Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Real Madrid or Juventus, places like that.
“The rest will want to try and get to the Premier League and impress.”
