Former Manchester United and Aberdeen manager Sir Alex Ferguson revealed the two best stadium atmospheres he has ever experienced in his legendary career.

Ferguson’s prolific career in the dugout, both in Scotland and England, found him travelling all over the world and witnessing first-hand different stadium atmospheres.

The 82-year-old Scotsman, who did one thing before every match at Old Trafford, called it time on his career in 2013 after leading United to the Premier League title.

Ferguson has opened up on the talented players he had at the Premier League club and boldly claimed how he managed only four world-class footballers in his career.

The iconic Scot was known for wanting the best in class at United and would do everything in his power to sign top players, including making personal phone calls.

However, even Ferguson fell short on some transfer targets and the legendary former United boss has openly spoken about his regret in not landing some players.

Ferguson, who was baffled at one current player’s career trajectory, candidly shared the four players he wished he managed during his illustrious spell at Old Trafford.

The former Aberdeen head coach, who is widely considered one of the best managers of all time, revealed after his career his top two stadium atmospheres.

Ferguson’s two best stadium atmospheres

Speaking to United legend Gary Neville, Ferguson was asked what he would consider to be the two best stadium atmospheres in both England and Europe.

Ferguson, who named his three most underrated United players, picked the Scotland national team’s home stadium of Hampden Park for how it was “absolutely electric.”

The United legend then revealed his other pick would be none other than Liverpool’s stadium, with Ferguson saying Anfield had a “marvellous” and “volatile” atmosphere.

“Hampden Park [in Europe] without [a] doubt,” Ferguson told LADbible TV in 2021.

“Whenever it’s 140,000 […] I played in front of 136,000 and I went to see the Scotland-England games. Oh, the atmosphere was absolutely electric.

“And Anfield [in England]. And Anfield [is] electric. I mean, you’ve been there and you know what it’s like – bloody hell!

“It’s a marvellous atmosphere. But you have to expect that atmosphere there even if you are losing. It was a really volatile atmosphere.”

Ferguson on Old Trafford atmosphere

Ferguson was known to be critical of Old Trafford’s atmosphere when he was United manager and didn’t hesitate in expressing his frustration over the lack of noise.

The former United boss relished in the atmosphere of United matches and it is unsurprising that Ferguson would want fans to sing their hearts out at Old Trafford.

However, the Ferguson era for United saw incredible atmosphere during Champions League nights and the Red Devils’ heated matches with Premier League rivals.

Ferguson remains an ever-present figure at United even after his retirement and is often spotted watching the Red Devils in action from the Old Trafford stands.
