Manchester United want to strengthen their midfield this summer and Monaco’s Youssouf Fofana is the perfect candidate.

After wrapping up deals for Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro already this summer, attention has now turned towards midfield.

With question marks around the future of Casemiro, Scott McTominay and Christian Eriksen at Old Trafford, United’s midfield depth could be left dangerously thin if no reinforcements are brought in.

In particular, United are crying out for a defensive-minded midfielder with Kobbie Mainoo, Mason Mount and McTominay all suiting a more advanced or box-to-box role.

Therefore, with Casemiro’s performances declining and a potential exit on the cards, it is paramount that United bring in the right replacement.

Talks with Paris Saint-Germain for Manuel Ugarte are well underway, but an even better-suited option in Youssouf Fofana has now emerged.

Man United interest in Youssouf Fofana

Fofana has emerged as an alternative to Ugarte with PSG demanding a hefty fee for the Uruguayan.

Sky Sports claim that United have an interest in Fofana with Monaco eager to cash in on the 25-year-old before they risk losing him on a free transfer.

Fofana has been with the Ligue 1 side since 2020 and his contract expires next summer which gives United plenty of bargaining power in negotiations.

Fabrizio Romano suggested in May that Fofana may be available for just £17million this summer, making him a much cheaper alternative.

Stats prove why Man United must sign Youssouf Fofana

Fofana’s stats will put stars in the eyes of Manchester United fans around the globe.

According to WhoScored, Fofana has won possession in the midfield third 297 times since the start of the 2022/23 Ligue 1 season – more than any other player.

But his ability on the ball should not be understated either. According to FBref, he ranks in the top five percent of midfielders for progressive passes with 8.3 per 90 minutes.

Not only are Fofana’s numbers impressive, but he has received a glowing review from former teammate Cesc Fabregas.

The Spaniard insisted that Fofana would suit the Premier League style on the Planet Premier League podcast.

“He’s a very dynamic and strong player, good on the ball, a modern type of player, aggressive, can jump, he’s box to box,” Fabregas said.

“I really like Fofana and I think he fits very well with the Premier League style.”
