Manchester United got their first taste of victory this pre-season as they beat Rangers in their own backyard courtesy of Amad and Joe Hugill’s goal.

The match was notable for a lot of talking points, like Leny Yoro’s debut performance which will excite the fans, or the slick play of United’s kids in the second half.

The team will depart for the USA for the next leg of their tour and one player needs to be there at all costs- Harry Amass.

The left-back returned with a vengeance against Rangers after struggling against Rosenborg, reminding the world of his qualities again.

Harry Amass redemption game

It feels crazy to write off a 17-year-old talent after a single pre-season game but his display vs Rosenborg, coupled with Sam Murray impressing in his position led to questions being asked about how ready Amass is.

He answered them resoundingly with a commanding display in the second game. He was everywhere defensively and a constant thorn in the opponents’ skin in attack.

He finished the game having completed the most dribbles and winning the most duels. He completed 4/4 dribbles and won seven duels to mark a complete game from left-back.

His determination to make an impact also speaks volumes about his mentality. He didn’t cower or hide after his underwhelming performance vs Rosenborg.

Instead, he came on with a point to prove, ready to correct the wrongs of the first game. On pure talent, he still remains one of the most highly-rated talents in the academy. This game was a nice reminder of his mentality too.

A left-field situation

United’s situation at left-back has taken a completely unexpected turn. From playing the last season without a natural left-back for most matches, they could well start this year with four fit ones.

Luke Shaw played and looked comfortable in the England jersey at the Euros while Tyrell Malacia is also ramping up his recovery.

Amass was always tipped to make his breakthrough at some point and Sam Murray has also come out of nowhere to gatecrash the pecking order with good performances in both pre-season games.

Shaw and Malacia are undisputed first-teamers while Amass and Murray are arguably both too good to stay playing for the U21s already.

From not having any option to now having four, Ten Hag has a decision to make on the future of at least one. One would think he’d rather have this problem than the one he had last season!
