Antonio Valencia was always a bit of a warrior for Manchester United.

The Ecuadorian always played with his heart on his sleeve and gave it all for the club. Initially bought as Cristiano Ronaldo‘s replacement, Valencia quickly became one of United’s most important players and one of the first names on the team sheet.

He eventually ended up being United’s captain, which was dually deserved due to his efforts at Old Trafford.

United could do with a player like him now really. There aren’t many leaders on the current side – which was definitely for all to see against Fulham.

Antonio Valencia sends message to Manchester United players

Manchester United ended up losing 2-1 to Fulham in the Premier League, with a last-minute Alex Iwobi strike securing all three points for the Cottagers.

It was a depleting defeat for the Red Devils, who never really got going. No player appeared to step up and take the game by the scruff of its neck.

Valencia took to Twitter/X on Saturday night and posted a telling 12-word message, that seemingly was aimed at the Manchester United squad following the performance. It read:

‘Until the last moment for this shirt, there were never any excuses.’

A real warrior, and a great leader.

Manchester United need a player to step up

Despite a string of good performances in 2024, there are still many underlying issues at United. The most prominent could be the severe lack of a leader on the pitch.

Bruno Fernandes, whilst his love for the club can’t be questioned, doesn’t necessarily have the capabilities to lead and motivate his entire side.

Manchester United have had legendary players in the past like Roy Keane, Nemanja Vidic, Wayne Rooney, and even Valencia who were able to pick up the team in tough times.

No current United player is doing this – which needs to change. Whether it is a summer acquisition or an existing player taking responsibility, Erik ten Hag needs to get this issue rectified quickly.
