There will be no trophies for Manchester United this season sadly, now for the fifth year in a row. The club’s newfound allergy to winning silverware has been a grind for supporters who had become used to winning.
United fans used to gloat that the only way after leaving United was to go downhill. But that no longer seems to be the case.
Several players have enjoyed success after departing Old Trafford, and that looks set to continue this season. There are eight former Red Devils who could win major trophies in 2021/22…
Zlatan Ibrahimovic
At the grand footballing age of 40, Zlatan Ibrahimovic could win his first Serie A title since his 2008/09 win with Inter.
This time Zlatan could do it with AC Milan, who are seeking to win their first Scudetto since 2010/11.
Milan are currently top of Serie A with a three point lead with eight games to go. It is tight, with Napoli three points back and Inter six points back with a game in hand.
Zlatan has scored eight goals in 18 games, of which 11 have been starts, and if he can go onto win the title this could be the most satisfying league win of his career.
Milan are also in the Coppa Italia semi-finals against rivals Inter, with the tie at 0-0 after a tight first leg.
Matteo Darmian
On the other side of Milan, Inter full-back Matteo Darmian is hoping to help the Nerazzuri retain the Serie A title they won last season.
Darmian, 32, has made 19 league appearances for Inter this season, scoring once, and if they can win their game in hand then they will be just three points behind leaders AC.
Inter have a tricky away game against Juventus this coming weekend, and there is also the Coppa Italia to try and win from their perspective too.
Alexis Sanchez
Darmian’s Inter teammate Alexis Sanchez has had a new lease of life at the club since thankfully calling time on his Manchester United career.
He is still not prolific, scoring only three league goals, but Sanchez remains a key part of Inter’s squad, featuring in 21 league games.
He won the title last season with Inter, and like Darmian, he could still end up as an Italian double-winner if results break their way this season.
Memphis Depay
Memphis Depay landed a dream move to Barcelona last summer after an impressive stint with Lyon. La Liga is out of their grasp, but there is a cup up for grabs.
Barcelona are into the Europa League quarter-finals where they face Eintracht Frankfurt. Win that, and a semi-final against West Ham or former club Lyon awaits.
Depay has scored 10 goals in 20 La Liga appearances, although he is still to score in continental competition for the club.
Gerard Pique
Gerard Pique has enjoyed incredible success since leaving Manchester United in 2008, and like Depay, he can still win the Europa League with Barcelona.
It would be the first time he has ever won the competition, as this year is the first time he has even played in it.
Pique is celebrating recently playing his 600th game for Barcelona, the fourth highest figure in their history.
Angel di Maria
Angel di Maria lasted only one season in Manchester and he is not remembered fondly at all. Since leaving, however, he has enjoyed plenty of success.
Di Maria has gone onto win four Ligue 1 titles with Paris Saint-Germain and he is on course to win a fifth, with the side 12 points clear at the top.
The 34-year-old has become more of a peripheral figure towards their success, scoring three goals and providing three assists this season.
Ander Herrera
Ander Herrera joined Di Maria in PSG in 2019 and he is set to win the Ligue 1 title for a second time.
Herrera has made 17 appearances in their league run, scoring three goals, also netting once in the Champions League.
Along with Di Maria, Herrera has helped manager Mauricio Pochettino as the PSG boss moves closer to winning his first ever league title.
Daley Blind
Daley Blind is a key part of Erik ten Hag’s system at Ajax and is hoping to win the Dutch league and cup double this season.
Ajax are two points clear of PSV at the top of the table, and also face PSV in the upcoming KNVB Cup semi-finals.
If Ten Hag is United-bound, Blind will play an important role in sending him to Old Trafford on a high note.
Blind, 32, has played in 38 games in all competitions for Ajax this season, featuring mainly as a left-back.
