Jadon Sancho shone brightly in the Champions League last night, scoring the first goal for Borussia Dortmund as they advanced to the quarter-finals.

The Manchester United loanee gave his best display since leaving Old Trafford, with a goal and a cracking individual performance on the Champions League stage for Dortmund.

The English winger was happy with his performance and pundits were also impressed. This signifies an upturn in form for a man who has severely struggled in football for the past few years.

But as Jadon Sancho will steal the headlines, another former Manchester United man was absolutely immense in getting his team through to the last 16. That man – is Memphis Depay.

Memphis Depay immense for Atletico Madrid

Former Red Devil Depay was introduced into the frame of the Champions League clash between Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan with the scores at 1 – 1 – meaning Diego Simeone’s side were crashing out on aggregate.

The 30-year-old looked dangerous immediately after coming on, but it was three minutes before the 90 where he made a real impact. He latched onto a neat Koke pass in the box and fired a low shot across goal which beat Yann Sommer and sent the Metropolitano into a state of ecstasy.

Extra time then beckoned, where Depay was one of the best players on the pitch, and then ultimately penalties.

The Dutchman stepped up for one of these, blasting it in the roof of the net, which along with some Jan Oblak saves – sent Atletico through to the following round.

Memphis Depay should’ve been a world-beater…

When Depay arrived at Manchester United – fans thought he’d certainly be the next great number seven, how wrong they were.

Signed in 2015 from PSV, Depay was dubbed as the next big thing in football and was rewarded with the iconic strip.

Aside from a few astonishing performances, he never got going and was shipped off to Lyon after just two years.

This Champions League performance was a level he should have reached years ago. Now at 30 years old – his career appears to have passed him by. A little sad in all honesty.
