Manchester United are now looking to sign Monaco midfielder Youssouf Fofana having missed out on a summer deal.

Manchester United signed Sofyan Amrabat on deadline day but he is yet to make an impact at Old Trafford.

Amrabat is only on loan from Fiorentina and there is no guarantee that his move become permanent in 2024.

United may look at alternative targets and Monaco star Youssouf Fofana is thought to still be on the radar.

90Min report that United are interested in landing Fofana amid links with a move for Paul Mitchell.

Mitchell is expected to join United when Ineos secure their investment in the club, with the Englishman looking for another role after leaving Monaco.

Mitchell was Monaco’s sporting director and he may well target some of the Ligue 1 side’s players if he does join United.

Fofana could be one of them but United have liked him even before targeting Mitchell.

Fabrizio Romano reported in August that United had targeted a deal to sign Fofana but Monaco rejected a loan offer.

United haven’t backed away but now face a battle for the Frenchman’s signature.

90Min suggest that Arsenal, Liverpool and Newcastle United are all keen on Fofana, so United won’t be alone in the race.

Paul Mitchell a fan of Fofana

Mitchell may well head to United very soon and his presence may only strengthen the interest in Fofana.

Stalybridge-born Mitchell hailed Fofana in 2022, suggesting that he was going overlooked because of Aurelien Tchouameni’s excellence alongside him.

Fofana is adept at playing as a holding midfielder or in more of a box-to-box role, certainly possessing ability the ability to get around the pitch and break up play.

A French international with plenty of untapped potential at just 24, Fofana could bring some energy to the United engine room – and his arrival would surely rule out Amrabat staying long-term.
