Manchester United have now been credited with an interest in signing a midfielder who could be perfect next to Kobbie Mainoo.

The midfield situation has been a problem for far too long at Manchester United with countless seasoned professionals coming and failing to really impact the team.

But this season, in the form of 18-year-old Kobbie Mainoo, Erik ten Hag has found a winning formula and now just needs to pair him up with an equally brilliant partner.

This appears to be a priority for United, with recent links to the likes of Morten Hjulmand showcasing United’s desire to strengthen.

The fact Sofyan Amrabat‘s loan is unlikely to be made permanent has only heightened the need to bring a midfielder in.

Manchester United back in for Youssouf Fofana

In the hunt for a midfielder, United seem to have stumbled back onto Frenchman Youssouf Fofana who is currently plying his trade at Monaco.

This is according to TeamTalk who have shared reports of the Frenchman once more being an option for United.

This comes after reports in the summer of Fofana being among United’s options for the midfield.

Fofana could bring some real tenacity to the Old Trafford midfield which could benefit Mainoo as it’d give him more license to be an on-the-ball player as opposed to the dogged defensive shifts he’s had to put in lately.

What can United expect from Fofana?

The kind of player Fofana is was recently described by former defender Olivier Bernard, who was speaking to the BBC when he said:

“Youssouf Fofana is an attacking midfielder, box to box I would say, not so much creativity but work rate. We compare him to N’Golo Kante at times because he does defend hard on the ball, and he always wants to win the ball.”

Kante is a player United have long been suitors for, as recently as 2022 and so the chance to sign a carbon copy shouldn’t be scoffed at with there being every chance United are keen.

At just £26m as well, he could be an absolute bargain for Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
