Manchester United icon Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed four players he wished he had managed during his legendary career at Old Trafford.

Ferguson stepped down as United manager in 2013 after leading the Red Devils to their last Premier League title, ending his illustrious 26-year reign at the club.

The 82-year-old legendary Scotsman claimed he managed only four world-class players during his prolific spell at United, despite signing an abundance of talent.

Ferguson was responsible for bringing the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, Eric Cantona and Ruud van Nistelrooy to United during his glittering career.

However, even the former United manager missed out on players and Ferguson has admitted his regret over not bringing one legendary footballer to Old Trafford.

Despite falling short on some signings at United, Ferguson still managed incredible success at Old Trafford thanks to the star-studded roster of players that he had.

Ferguson ended his managerial career with a whopping 38 trophies at United, including leading the Premier League club to a continental treble in 1999.

The United legend is widely considered one of the best managers of all time, with even Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola paying the ultimate tribute to him.

Ferguson’s four players he wanted at United

Ferguson was keen to sign the best in class for United and the iconic Scot would even break his own transfer rules to bring one player to Old Trafford.

Speaking to LADbible TV in 2021, the former Aberdeen boss was asked which players he wished he could have signed for United.

Ferguson’s top two picks were Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane and Tottenham star Son Heung-min, with the ex-United boss also puzzled by Dele Alli’s rapid decline.

The United legend, who missed out on one player to Jose Mourinho, also hailed former City star Sergio Aguero as an “exceptional” goalscorer and a “terrific striker.”

“I think that Kane. I thought Alli was gonna be a top player. I must admit, I don’t know what has happened there,” Ferguson told Gary Neville.

“But Kane’s certainly been [excellent] and the boy Son at Tottenham, these [are] excellent players.

“Aguero has been a terrific striker, there’s no doubt about that. His goalscoring has been exceptional.

“I think the top teams will always produce a player that can stand out and I think those two in particular [Kane and Son].”

Ferguson’s four picks would have thrived under him

Ferguson’s choice of Kane is very telling considering that United were linked with the 30-year-old England captain before his £82m move to Bayern last summer.

Kane has made an exceptional start to life in Germany and Son has been a pivotal figure at Spurs, becoming Tottenham’s captain after Kane’s exit from the club.

Aguero built a legendary legacy at City and his spell at Barcelona was unfortunately cut short after he was forced to retire in 2021 due to a heart condition.

Despite his career taking a tumble, Alli was thought of highly by Ferguson and the United legend even urged Mourinho to sign him during his spell at Old Trafford.
