Manchester United legend Dwight Yorke has emerged as a potential candidate for a managerial role with an international football team, according to stunning reports.
Dwight Yorke saw considerable success during his prolific playing career at Manchester United under legendary former manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
Signed from Aston Villa in 1998 for a £12.6m fee, the 52-year-old struck up a formidable strike partnership with fellow United legend Andy Cole.
Andy Cole and Yorke’s legendary partnership played a key role in Sir Alex Ferguson’s men capturing a famous continental treble in the 1998-99 season.
Yorke lifted three Premier League titles, a Champions League and an FA Cup before he made his exit from Old Trafford in 2002 and signed for Blackburn Rovers.
Yorke linked with management return
Following his legendary spell at Old Trafford, Dwight Yorke went on to play for Blackburn Rovers, Birmingham City, Sydney FC and Sunderland before retiring.
The former Manchester United striker took his first steps into management in 2022 after he was appointed the head coach of Australian side Macarthur FC.
Yorke lifted the Australia Cup in 2022 during his managerial spell with the A-League side, with the United legend making his exit from the club in 2023.
According to The Daily Mirror, the ex-United star has been linked with the Jamaica national team.
The newspaper reports that Yorke is a ‘prime candidate’ for the role and is ‘well respected’ by the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF).
Heimir Hallgrimsson was previously in charge of Jamaica and stepped down from his role as head coach after their disappointing run at the 2024 Copa America.
Jamaica finished bottom of Group B at this summer’s Copa America and the Reggae Boyz lost all three of their matches before crashing out of the tournament.
Heimir Hallgrimsson became the Republic of Ireland head coach earlier this month, with the JFF now on the hunt for a new manager.
The Mirror added that Yorke, who hasn’t managed a team since 2023, is believed to be a ‘popular choice’ with the squad’s ‘Premier League contingent.’
Yorke on learning from Man Utd legend Ferguson
Yorke has admitted that he has spent time with several legendary figures, including United legend Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsenal legend Arsene Wenger.
The former Trinidad and Tobago striker revealed the important words of wisdom that he took away from the people he spent his time around.
“I’ve spent time with the likes of Pep, Sir Alex, Steve McLaren and Arsene Wenger,” Yorke said, as per The Mirror.
“They will tell you: everyone wants to play attacking, front-foot football. I love that, being an attacker myself. You want to just score goals But there is a balance here.
“If you don’t have [a] good structure and a good system in place, then you are always likely to struggle.
“Burnley, for instance, played superb stuff, real attacking football in the Championship. They were so exciting under Vincent Kompany.
“But in the Premier League, they can’t even win a game. So you have to be very careful.”
