David de Gea made his 500th Manchester United appearance on Sunday in the draw with Newcastle.
Appropriately the Spaniard kept a clean sheet to mark the occasion, even if United were unable to get the win.
This encapsulated him his United spell, full of excellent individual achievements undone by an incomplete team in front of him.
De Gea was given a special presentation before kick-off, greeted by the manager who signed him, Sir Alex Ferguson.
He also met legendary goalkeeper Alex Stepney, who still leads him in appearances with 539.
Tributes to David de Gea
Manchester United teammate Bruno Fernandes showed his respect for David de Gea and all he has achieved, with a message on social media, paying tribute to the goalkeeper.
Fernandes said it is ‘an honour’ to play alongside De Gea and hopes to share many more moments in the same team as the Spaniard.
Following the game, David de Gea had some words to share too, thanking everybody involved for marking the special day.
He added that he also wants to continue at United, the club he calls his ‘home’.
Teammates past and present responded to De Gea’s post, including Juan Mata and Federico Macheda, in awe of the goalkeeper’s ability and longevity.
