Manchester United legend Bryan Robson has claimed that one Sir Alex Ferguson signing is “very underrated” for the incredibly talented player he was at Old Trafford.

Bryan Robson, who remains Manchester United’s longest-serving captain in history, was a key figure for former manager Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford.

The 67-year-old retained the captain’s armband under Ferguson after the legendary 82-year-old Scotsman replaced Ron Atkinson as manager at United in 1986.

Former England midfielder Robson made a whopping 412 appearances for the Red Devils during the 1980s and 1990s and scored 92 times for United.

Robson enjoyed incredible success at Old Trafford and lifted two Premier League titles, three FA Cups, a League Cup and a European Cup Winners’ Cup with United.

The United legend left the Premier League club in 1994 and saw out the remainder of his illustrious playing career at Middlesbrough.

Robson in awe at underrated Man Utd legend

Bryan Robson sat down with former England manager Sam Allardyce on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast and was asked to build his ‘ultimate’ XI.

The former England and Manchester United midfielder played with a plethora of talented players in his career, including Roy Keane, Ryan Giggs and Eric Cantona.

When building his all-time United XI, Robson picked Red Devils legend Denis Law alongside ‘Holy Trinity’ members George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton.

Robson had Denis Law leading his frontline alongside United legend Wayne Rooney, who was widely praised by the iconic former Red Devils captain.

The former Middlesbrough manager was in awe at Wayne Rooney’s achievements and claimed the ex-England and United striker was “very underrated.”

“And to go alongside, Denis, Wayne Rooney,” Robson said.

“Anybody who can break Manchester United’s record goalscorer, Bobby Charlton, break his England record; Wayne Rooney, I think, is very underrated to the top player he actually was.”

Rooney’s prolific Man Utd career

Rooney had an incredible impact at Old Trafford after Ferguson snapped him up from Everton in a deal worth £27m in 2004.

The 38-year-old United legend played long after Ferguson’s retirement and was later promoted to the club captaincy under former Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal.

During his time at Old Trafford, Rooney lifted five Premier League titles, a Champions League, a Europa League, an FA Cup and three League Cups.

Rooney, who has been out of management since he was sacked by Birmingham City, overtook Charlton to become United’s all-time leading scorer at Old Trafford.

United legend Gary Neville has previously said that Rooney does not receive the credit he deserves and called his former teammate an “underrated player.”

“He’s to be fair… you get asked sometimes about [an] underrated player because he’s [Rooney] not normally in the conversation when you think about best United players,” he said on The Overlap’s Stick to Football show in January.

“But in terms of when I get asked about my best United XI, he’s always the No 1 centre-forward.

“He’s the best by a mile that I played with. The best by a mile in terms of goals, effort, everything, assists.”
