Former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane revealed to Gary Neville the best player he played alongside in his legendary football career.

Roy Keane, who recently named a team he would want to manage, is widely regarded as one of the best captains and midfielders of all time.

The Manchester United legend arrived at Old Trafford in 1993 after he impressed under former legendary manager Brian Clough at Nottingham Forest.

Keane was an essential figure in the United first team under Sir Alex Ferguson and the Irishman excelled both as a captain and a commanding midfielder.

The 52-year-old Sky Sports pundit’s trophy haul at Old Trafford included seven Premier League titles, a Champions League and four FA Cups.

Despite his incredible presence on the pitch and off it, Keane’s prolific spell at United came to an abrupt end in 2005 after Ferguson axed him from the club.

Keane, who recalled his brutal meeting with Ferguson, briefly played for Scottish side Celtic before calling it time on his illustrious playing career in 2006.

Keane on best player he played alongside

Keane managed Sunderland and Ipswich Town after his career, as well as serving as assistant manager for the Republic of Ireland, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest.

However, the Irish hardman has become one of the biggest names in punditry and continued to pull no punches from the sideline as a Sky Sports pundit.

Following on from his playing career, Roy Keane has opened up on his time on the pitch and even named one of his former United teammates as overrated.

The former Manchester United skipper, who named the best player of all time, played alongside a star-studded roster of talent during his time at Old Trafford.

When Gary Neville asked Keane who was the best player he played alongside, the former Republic of Ireland international picked out two players at first.

Keane talked about playing alongside Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes in midfield, with the former United star choosing the latter as the best player he played with.

Speaking on The Overlap in 2021, he said: “Because I played with them in the middle of the park, I would go Butty or Scholesy.

“Scholesy maybe because he had a goal in him.”

Scholes hailed Keane’s influence at United

Scholes is widely considered one of the best midfielders of all time and was a key figure for Ferguson in the heart of United’s teams of the past.

The 49-year-old former United star forged effective midfield partnerships with the likes of Keane and Michael Carrick during his remarkable career at Old Trafford.

Scholes insisted that former United teammate Keane “could do everything” and highlighted the ex-Republic of Ireland midfielder’s most “underrated” attribute.

Speaking to The Premier League Storybook (via TNT Sports) in 2022, he said: “He [Keane] could do everything.

“Underrated a little bit with his quality on the ball. Great passer, I loved the way he stuck balls into his centre forwards.”

Scholes added: “He felt the responsibility to run a team because he’d become the captain by this point, and he took responsibility to take this team to the next level.

“It was infectious to everyone. Don’t get me wrong, he was a man who demanded a lot out of his team. It was like having a manager on the football pitch.”
