Manchester United legend Eric Cantona picked out a Euro 2024 star who represents an “important” cause for him and opened up about his admiration for one team.
Spain walked away with the Henri Delaunay trophy on Sunday evening after La Roja defeated England 2-1 in the Euro 2024 final at the Olympiastadion in Berlin.
Luis de la Fuente’s men were overlooked as tournament favourites and Spain emerged victorious in all seven of their Euro 2024 matches in Germany.
Spain knocked out host nation Germany and France en route to the final, with Luis de la Fuente’s side signing off the tournament without a single defeat.
The Euro 2024 champions showcased their creative attacking flair against England and took the lead in the second half through Spain winger Nico Williams.
Cole Palmer pulled back an important equaliser for England, but Mikel Oyarzabal found the back of the net in the 85th minute to ensure Spain’s win in the final.
Cantona spotlights Spain star from Euro 2024
Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams was one of the standout performers at the tournament alongside Spain teammate Lamine Yamal.
Both Lamine Yamal and Williams were devastating on the flanks at this summer’s Euros, with Spain benefiting from the impact that both players had.
Yamal was only 16 years old when the tournament started and the Barcelona winger announced himself on the world stage thanks to his red-hot form for Spain.
Speaking to The Times, Eric Cantona spotlighted the 17-year-old Spain star and spoke about his admiration for Yamal’s Moroccan roots.
“Immigration is very important for all countries,” he said.
“Lamine Yamal [the 17-year-old who scored a wonder goal for Spain against France in their Euro 2024 semi-final] is of Moroccan origin.
“I made a documentary on football and immigration. It’s important.”
Cantona continued further by adding praise on Spain’s performances at this summer’s Euros, including his admiration for how La Roja played on the pitch.
“I love the way Spain play,” he added.
“When you are a lover of football like me, you can only like this kind of team and the players they’ve got.
“I don’t support any team in particular. I support the team who play the best.”
Man Utd legend Cantona on France
Cantona has previously said he supports England ahead of his native homeland amid his own chequered experience with the France national team as a player.
The 58-year-old eccentric Manchester United legend admitted that he ‘loves’ the “vibes” that he sees from England fans singing their support for the Three Lions.
“France v England? I’d support England,” Cantona said.
“If I support one country, it’s England. I feel English in terms of football. The passion for the game, the vibes you feel as a player and a fan. I love to feel these vibes when they sing Three Lions.
“But I do think they could play much better football.”
