Harry Maguire has sent a message of thanks following England’s 2-0 victory over Malta on Friday night.
Harry Maguire has taken to social media to thank the England fanbase at Wembley Stadium last night for their touching tribute to Sir Bobby Charlton.
Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton passed away last month at the age of 86. Charlton is a club legend, scoring 249 goals for the club and has a stand at Old Trafford named after him.
Last night as England faced Malta, it was the first opportunity the Three Lions had to pay their respects to the 1966 World Cup winner.
After the game, former United captain Maguire sent a message of thanks to the supporters in the stadium.
Harry Maguire thanks fans for touching tribute
Before the game last night, the England players took part in a minute of applause in remembrance of the footballing icon. The lights were dimmed and the crowd were creating a display which read out ‘Sir Bobby’.
A truly special moment full of the respect he deserved, and afterwards Maguire took to Instagram to thank Wembley for the tribute.
“Special tribute for a special man”, he wrote in the caption before adding, “Thankyou Wembley”. A heart emoji and an England flag also featured in his caption under a photo of the display.
Maguire leading by example
Over the last eight weeks, Maguire has barely put a foot wrong on and off the pitch for United or England. Aside from being immense on the pitch for England last night, his social media message just shows how much respect he has.
Maguire attended the funeral last week which signifies how important Charlton is to him and the reverence he has shown and continues to show.
He looked likely to depart United during the summer but now it feels like he is deeply ingrained in the culture of this club which makes a sale difficult, as Erik ten Hag also looks to have re-evaluated his importance.
