Sky Sports pundit Roy Keane was lost for words after an “expensive” purchase that former Manchester United teammate David Beckham made during his playing career.
Beckham’s life, both on the pitch and off it, is the subject of a new four-part documentary on Netflix, which arrived on the streaming platform on Wednesday.
The 48-year-old influential former United winger, who retired from football in 2013, enjoyed a prolific playing career at both club level and on the international stage.
Beckham’s success saw him shoot off into superstardom, with the ex-England captain pocketing plenty of cash through his lucrative contracts and brand deals.
Before his departure to Real Madrid in 2003, Beckham captured six Premier League titles, a Champions League and two FA Cups under United legend Sir Alex Ferguson.

Keane’s reaction to Beckham’s purchase
Keane has always spoken highly of Beckham during his time at United and admired the work ethic his ex-teammate maintained, despite his celebrity success.
According to The Daily Star, the Irishman wasn’t sold on Beckham’s spending habits and was puzzled by the former England international’s purchase of a “fancy” pen.
Speaking on the ‘Beckham’ documentary, Keane said: “He was the first to do it. He certainly upped everyone’s game in the car park, I’ll give him that.
“He bought a fancy pen. I was like, ‘Who the f**k buys a pen? Who buys an expensive pen?’ Shirts and clothes and all that I get, but who buys a pen?”
Beckham on spending his money
Beckham revealed in the documentary that he wasn’t afraid to splash his cash from deals with the likes of Adidas, saying that he wanted “nice stuff.”
Speaking on his spending habits, the Inter Miami co-owner and president said: “I spent my money. I liked nice stuff.
“As soon as we got money, I wanted to buy a nice watch. I signed a contract with Adidas for £50,000 — and I went and bought an M3 for £50,000.”
Ferguson had a close relationship with Beckham and the former Madrid and LA Galaxy superstar even saw the ex-United manager as a ‘father figure’ to him.
However, their relationship came under strain towards the end of Beckham’s United run, which included the infamous ‘boot incident’ involving Ferguson.
Speaking in the Netflix documentary, Ferguson said: “He [Beckham] changed. There is no doubt about that.
“That sort of media attention he was getting, becoming a celebrity, was different to what I wanted.
“Getting David to keep his feet on the ground became more different. He was a good-looking boy and he was well cut, so it was a great attraction for the media.”
