Micah Richards has been discussing the former Manchester United coach which has left him awe-struck in recent weeks.

Michael Carrick showed his promise immediately in his managerial career as he took charge in the temporary gap between Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s departure and Ralf Rangnick’s arrival.

He stopped the rut which was taking place at Old Trafford with a 1-1 draw against Chelsea. He then oversaw consecutive wins over Villareal and Arsenal before stepping down as interim Manchester United manager.

This promise has translated excellently into his first actual role in management as Middlesbrough boss. In his first season, he won 18 of 30 games and turned Boro from a lower-league side into a side that played in the playoffs.

Now after his most recent victory – against Chelsea which United fans loved – he’s been praised by Micah Richards.

Micah Richards waxes lyrical about ‘special’ Michael Carrick

Speaking on Friday’s episode of The Rest is Football podcast, Richards lauded Carrick for his work at Boro.

He said: “They were so organised in what they needed to do, he’s got so many injuries, but it just shows you what a manager can coach his team and they buy-in to what he wants to do and they can implement it, it just shows you how good of a coach he is.”

Continuing, Richards admitted he thinks Carrick is something special when compared to other coaches to come from the England golden generation.

“I think we’ve talked about [Steven] Gerrard and [Frank] Lampard and [Wayne] Rooney but I think Carrick has got something special and I think what’s the best about Carrick is he can sort of work with players who are not at the top of their game and he can really improve a team.

“Just watching them over the Saturday and then the Tuesday, it’s really encouraging especially what he can bring if he was allowed to get better players within Middlesbrough, I think he’s got something special I really do.”

Carrick has been tipped as a future Manchester United manager

Speaking back in 2023, Ole was speaking about Carrick and mentioned that the Middlesbrough boss is a ‘winner’ and is a possible future United boss.

This claim looks like a better prediction every day as Carrick works wonders with a team which is punching well above its weight.

The football Carrick has his team playing is very intricate and deserves praise with hugely complicated systems of passing which Erik ten Hag could only dream of implementing at United.
