Manchester United fans spoke out about Marcel Sabitzer after Borussia Dortmund suffered a 2-0 defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League final on Saturday.

Marcel Sabitzer enjoyed a loan spell at Old Trafford in the 2022-23 season after Manchester United signed him from Bayern Munich in February 2023.

The 30-year-old Austrian midfielder managed 18 appearances for United across all competitions, with Sabitzer scoring three times and registering a single assist.

Sabitzer lifted the League Cup during his spell with United, but the former Bayern Munich man fell short of the FA Cup trophy in 2023 after the Red Devils’ 2-1 defeat.

The Borussia Dortmund star impressed at times for United, but Sabitzer saw his loan spell at Old Trafford interrupted by injuries.

Sabitzer returned to Bayern last summer and the Austria international made his exit from the German club and signed for Dortmund in 2023.

Sabitzer shines against Real Madrid

Marcel Sabitzer has impressed in his debut season with Borussia Dortmund, with the Austria midfielder scoring six times and picking up nine assists in 40 appearances.

The former Manchester United player started the Champions League final at Wembley on Saturday and Sabitzer was a key midfield influence for Dortmund.

Borussia Dortmund put in a strong showing against Los Blancos in the first half and Sabitzer played a starring role for the German club at Wembley.

Despite the Bundesliga side’s best efforts, Madrid weathered the storm and finally broke the deadlock late in the second half against Dortmund.

Dani Carvajal fired the La Liga club into the lead before Vinicius Junior scored Madrid’s second nine minutes later and sealed the Champions League trophy.

Sabitzer saw out the full 90 minutes of the Champions League final, while United loanee Jadon Sancho came off in the 87th minute after failing to make an impact.

Man Utd fans react to Sabitzer in Champions League final

United fans on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, were crestfallen for Sabitzer after Dortmund failed to lift the Champions League trophy.

Some Red Devils supporters admitted they were sad to see Sabitzer in tears at the full-time whistle, while others were impressed with his overall performance.

But United fans also suggested that the Red Devils made a mistake not signing him last summer, despite his injury-hit loan spell at Old Trafford.

“We should have kept Sabitzer,” one fan said.

Someone else added: “Sending Sancho on loan is not the mistake, it’s not signing Sabitzer [that] is a massive mistake.”

A third asked: “How on earth did United not keep Sabitzer, though?”

“For what it’s worth, I would’ve loved it if Sabitzer lifted that trophy,” another tweeted.

While a fifth wrote: “Cheer up, Sabitzer, cheer up… Gotta feel for Dortmund, they will have nightmares for not taking their chances.”

Somebody else simply posted: “Happy for Madrid, sad to see Sabitzer sad.”

A seventh suggested: “If ever there was a player United should’ve kept, it was Sabitzer… midfield Swiss knife with [the] end product.”

Another said: “Feel bad for Sabitzer. Would have been nice to see him win the UCL. Was really handy for us last season.”
