Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher pulled no punches towards Wayne Rooney and Gary Neville after the Manchester United legends made a bold claim about one player at Euro 2024 star.
Euro 2024 will culminate on Sunday with the final between Spain and England at the Olympiastadion in Berlin, with kick-off slated for 8pm UK time.
Gareth Southgate’s England side are within touching distance of their first major piece of silverware since the 1966 World Cup.
The England boss previously fell short of the Henri Delaunay trophy at Euro 2020 after a penalty shootout defeat to Italy at Wembley.
The Three Lions were one of the tournament favourites ahead of Euro 2024 in Germany, but England have underwhelmed with their performances.
England produced a sensational 2-1 comeback win against Slovakia in the last 16 before defeating Switzerland on penalties in the quarter-finals.
Gareth Southgate’s men came from behind in the semi-finals to beat the Netherlands 2-1 on Wednesday evening and punched their ticket to the final.
Spain, on the other hand, have been widely praised for their form at this summer’s Euros and have won all six of their matches under manager Luis de la Fuente.
La Roja knocked host nation Germany out of Euro 2024 in the quarter-finals before making a 2-1 comeback win against France in the semi-finals on Tuesday.
Rooney and Neville talk Euro 2024 star
Speaking ahead of Euro 2024, Wayne Rooney praised England captain Harry Kane and believed that his former Three Lions teammate is his country’s best-ever player.
“I think he is incredible,” he told Gary Neville on The Overlap.
“I think the goals he has scored. The assists he has added over the last few years as well. For me, I would say he is England’s greatest-ever player.
“I believe that. You were talking about Jude [Bellingham] before with his work rate. But with Harry, there is never an issue. He is the ultimate professional. He never misses a game.”
During the segment, Neville was stunned by Rooney’s bold statement and was on the fence over whether he agreed with his former Manchester United teammate.
Fast-forward to July and Neville appeared to change his tune and now agreed with United and England legend Rooney over the “absolutely sensational” Harry Kane.
“That is massive praise from someone who has been around the block, Wayne Rooney,” he said on Sky Sports.
“I wouldn’t disagree with him either. I think Harry Kane has been absolutely sensational.
“You just know full well he is going to deliver for you. I think he is below his best at this tournament, it does look like he is carrying something.
“But you look at that record now and who he is up there with some of the great strikers of all time.”
Carragher react to Rooney and Neville’s claim
Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane is currently tied with five other players at Euro 2024 in the race for the Golden Boot.
The 30-year-old England skipper has found the back of the net three times at the tournament, including scoring a controversial penalty against the Netherlands.
However, Kane has been met with widespread criticism over his form at this summer’s Euros and his lack of impact over the course of 90 minutes in matches.
Sky Sports’ Instagram page on Thursday posted a photo of Kane alongside Neville’s admission that he agreed with Rooney over the Bayern Munich star.
“Gary Neville says he agrees with Wayne Rooney that Harry Kane is England’s greatest ever player,” reads the caption.
Jamie Carragher was spotted in the comments of the post and hit out at Neville and Rooney over their “absolute nonsense” claim about Kane.
He wrote: “I love Harry Kane but that’s absolute nonsense from the two of you!!!!”
