Manchester United youngster Kobbie Mainoo made his Champions League debut in testing circumstances in Turkey.

Many were surprised that Kobbie Mainoo was not in Manchester United’s starting line-up to face Galatasaray, which was a sign of how far the midfielder has come.

Mainoo, 18, has been highly praised since his first Premier League start at the weekend, in a 3-0 win v Everton.

The teenager came off the bench against Galatasaray, with Manchester United earning a point, which felt like it should have been a victory.

Kobbie Mainoo coped well v Galatasaray

Kobbie Mainoo came on for Sofyan Amrabat in the 58th minute, with Manchester United 3-1 up against Galatasaray. It was part of a double change, with Anthony Martial also replacing Rasmus Hojlund.

The teenager may reflect that the double change did not work, with United drawing the game 3-3, however, he can be proud of his own display in difficult circumstances.

Galatasaray’s second half goals came from a free-kick, and a long range effort. United had enough chances to go on and win the game.

Mainoo impressed against Everton with his composure on the ball, and this was clear to see at Galatasaray too, despite the Turkish side’s attempts to close him down as quickly as possible.

Here is a look at the key statistics from Kobbie Mainoo’s performance…

Mainoo was remarkably efficient, completing 100 per cent of his passes and winning 100 per cent of his duels.

If there was one criticism, it’s that he did not get on the ball enough, but that’s being idealistic.

For comparison, Sofyan Amrabat had 27 touches in 58 minutes, below the rate of Mainoo’s contribution.

There was one moment in injury time that drew applause from the TNT Sports commentary team where he won a tackle, chipped the ball over an on-rushing opponent, stopped, turned, and completed a tight pass near the halfway line, under pressure. The game was getting frenetic, and his composure and technical quality was on full display.

Scholes wants to see more Mainoo

Mainoo earned backing from Manchester United legend Paul Scholes, who praised the teenager’s instincts.

He told the broadcaster after the game: “I think Mainoo needs a run in the team. And from what we saw at Everton on Sunday, I think now it’s time to give him a chance.

“This back four, they need protecting. No one senses danger as much as this young lad.”
