Sofyan Amrabat’s future at Manchester United is now even more uncertain after recent developments over the weekend, according to reports.

Erik ten Hag and Manchester United decided that Moroccan midfielder Sofyan Amrabat, who shone for his country at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, would be the defensive rock they needed.

After looking like one of the best players on the pitch for Fiorentina in the Europa Conference League final defeat to West Ham United, Amrabat’s future in Italy looked to be uncertain.

Months of being linked with the Red Devils eventually led to United making their move with just days left of the summer transfer window. Despite this, the midfielder has failed to seize his chance at Old Trafford so far.

Amrabat’s future

After being brought into the club with a lot of fanfare due to his performances on the world’s biggest stage, the midfielder has, so far, failed to impress the hierarchy and the fans of his qualities in the team.

Now, according to a report from Italian outlet Calciomercato, Kobbie Mainoo’s superb start for the Red Devils against Everton may well have sealed the 27-year-old’s fate at Old Trafford.

Amrabat’s deal to join United was a loan with a future option to buy, which looked likely to be triggered. However, with the emergence of Mainoo, that ‘no longer seems so obvious’, since Amrabat is ‘struggling beyond all expectations’ according to the Italian report.

As well as this, a move back to his parent club Fiorentina is being considered which would certainly be a surprise.

Mainoo’s spot to lose

As long as the teenager can keep fit, then it looks like Mainoo will be the starting midfielder for as long as he continues to perform so impressively as he did at Goodison Park.

This would, of course, mean that Amrabat’s future at the club is unclear and it would be a surprise if United triggered the permanent option to sign the midfielder for around £20 million.

Amrabat, similar to another former midfielder brought to United on loan in Marcel Sabitzer, has not worked out the way that the club or the fans would have hoped and a return to Italy or a move elsewhere looks to be the most likely option for the 27-year-old.
