Scott McTominay was keen to praise three Manchester United teammates after he scored the winner for the Red Devils.

Manchester United have finally broken the two-season hoodoo of not yet beating a side in the league’s top nine away from home after an important 2-1 victory over Aston Villa.

After Rasmus Hojlund had netted the opener for United, Douglas Luiz had scored the equaliser but it was the Red Devils who had the last laugh thanks to a late winner from Scott McTominay.

It was a superb header from the Scotsman following a stupendous ball into the box from Diogo Dalot and the midfielder was keen to praise the service from the right-back.

As well as praise for the cross, the midfielder was keen to single out Raphael Varane and Harry Maguire for how good they were.

McTominay on Dalot, Varane and Maguire

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, the midfielder was keen to praise the cross from the former FC Porto defender, who is having a superb season for United, as well as the centre-back pairing.

“It was an unbelievable cross to be fair, whipped with a lot of pace,” McTominay said. “I just needed it to hit my head and get it on target. Full credit to the boys, we created a lot of good chances that may go unnoticed.

“Every game you win is massive for taking a step forward and confidence for the boys. It is all positive but it is about repeating it and not getting too far ahead of ourselves when we win a few. We’ve got to repeat it now.

“The guys at the back were immense, particularly Harry [Maguire] and Raphael [Varane]. It was a top-level performance and a deserved win in the end.”

The right-back’s cross was superb and it was begging to be headed in and the midfielder, who has netted seven times in the league for the Red Devils.

United’s defensive performance

Despite the chances Villa had in the second half, the Red Devils were, on the whole, much more solid defensively and that has to be down to the pairing of Varane and Maguire.

Prior to the injury Maguire suffered against Bayern Munich in the Champions League, the Englishman was getting praised for his performances and he was once again superb.

With Lisandro Martinez out of action for eight weeks, the Englishman is a more than suitable replacement and his performances could be key for the Red Devils.
