Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has had a tempestuous relationship with the Cameroon national team over the past 18 months.
Andre Onana has had quite a dramatic two years. Back at the end of the 2021/22 season he was featuring under Erik ten Hag at Ajax. He then joined Inter Milan and reached the Champions League final, before rejoining his former boss at Manchester United.
In the midst of this, he went to the World Cup with Cameroon, before falling out with his manager, and seemingly quitting international football. He was then called back into the squad last September, and went to the African Cup of Nations last month.
Onana’s spell at the tournament was disastrous. He arrived late, played one game, was dropped for two, and his country were eliminated.
Andre Onana fell out with Samuel Eto’o
Behind the scenes the Manchester United goalkeeper fell out with Cameroon supremo Samuel Eto’o, who is the president of the country’s football federation.
Chris Wheeler of the Mail reports Andre Onana and Eto’o have not even spoken since the 2022 World Cup, adding that ‘their relationship is broken and irreconcilable’.
Samuel Eto’o resignation rejected
Now, The Mail report Eto’o has offered his resignation – and it has been rejected by the Cameroon Football Federation.
This is a stance which will infuriate Andre Onana, leaving him with more questions surrounding his own international future.
Cameroon’s current next scheduled fixtures are World Cup qualifiers to be held in June.
It is fair to wonder whether Andre Onana will be involved at all, and whether he wants to be.
This ongoing disruption can only take his attention and focus away from Manchester United, and he would no doubt be happier if there was a change in leadership at the top for his country.
