Deal awaiting Mason Greenwood agreement
The missing element of the deal at present is Mason Greenwood agreeing the move.
He spent last season in Spain and was settled there. Some Marseille fans have expressed displeasure at his potential signing.
On the other hand, Marseille manager Roberto de Zerbi has spoken in favour of a deal, along with the club president.
Manchester United held meeting with Greenwood
Mason Greenwood was at Carrington for the first day of pre-season for a meeting over his future. He did not train.
According to The Times, Greenwood was seeking clarity over the club’s plans. He was told by sporting director Dan Ashworth and technical director Jason Wilcox that he has no future at Manchester United.
Greenwood has not played for Manchester United since his arrest in early 2021. Charges against him were later dropped.
Manchester United toyed with the idea of bringing him back to the first team fold last season, before a public and media outcry. He was loaned to Getafe.
Ineos have evaluated the situation and agree a sale is the best path forward. Manchester United need to raise funds, and Greenwood is an asset to be sold who can raise substantial funds as a homegrown player.
