Despite his contract expiring at the start of July, it appears Jonny Evans is training with Manchester United this summer.

Pre-season is well underway for Manchester United and we are now just a few days out from the opening pre-season game of the season.

Heading to Norway to face Rosenborg, United will be bringing an inexperienced squad with them, as several key names remain away either on holiday or in participation in Euro 2024 or Copa America.

At this time of year, training clips are the only insight we get into the players prior to the opening match and now in the latest clip released by United, fans have spotted Jonny Evans.

This would be quite telling, considering his contract had expired and could indicate he will be remaining at the club for the upcoming season.

Manchester United fans believe they’ve spotted Jonny Evans in pre-season training

Evans’ contract at United was supposed to have expired after June 30th, yet in a training clip shared on Friday – which has since been removed – fans believe they’ve seen the Northern Irish defender.

The clip showed him in conversation with Erik ten Hag during what looked like a cold, wet and windy summer’s day at Carrington.

Under the screenshot, most fans agreed that it was Evans and we also believe it is the 36-year-old who has been spotted.

The fact that United removed the clip also suggests that it was Evans as they are possibly trying to cover their tracks. Although Evans had already been pictured in the 2024/25 kit which was also a huge hint.

After a decent season, keeping Evans as a backup isn’t a bad idea considering how young the squad is and the fact it’s likely to get even younger.

What is the latest on Jonny Evans’ contract?

After this clip was seen, we talked with HITC’s transfer expert Graeme Bailey to learn about the current situation surrounding Evans at United.

“Player wants another year, and Erik ten Hag is happy to keep him – there have been talks. Likely he gets another year.”

Evans getting another year now seems nailed on, however, it is a bizarre situation that he hadn’t agreed on a deal before his old contract expired.

Ten Hag certainly seems to value Evans and could even be looking at him as a long-term coach or a youth coach/player role at some point in the future.

All we know is if he does stay, he shouldn’t be playing as often as he had to last season.
