Manchester United can move forward from last weekend’s unspeakable result as the Europa League returns tonight.

The Red Devils host Real Betis in the last 16, looking to take a step towards a second trophy of the season, having already won the Carabao Cup.

Betis are managed by Manuel Pellegrini, who has a strong record against United dating back to 2005.

Changes are likely to the United side which lost at the weekend, and we expected there could be as many as four.

Predicted Manchester United XI

Manchester United can’t change the whole XI which started against Liverpool, the back-up options are not strong enough throughout the squad to do so.

We do foresee a handful of changes, in defence and attack. David de Gea will probably retain his place in goal. He was the first player to apologise on social media after the weekend defeat.

There should be changes at full-back. Tyrell Malacia deserves his recall at left-back, while Aaron Wan-Bissaka can shore up the right-back spot. This would see Luke Shaw and Diogo Dalot drop out.

In central defence it wouldn’t be a surprise to see a change. Lisandro Martinez and fit again Victor Lindelof could be the combination Erik ten Hag goes with, they have worked well as a pairing when called upon.

This would see Raphael Varane drop out. Don’t be surprised to see Harry Maguire in the side though. He could be deemed as the right match-up for Betis striker Borja Iglesias.

A lack of options in midfield will see Casemiro and Fred start the game. Marcel Sabitzer is injured and Scott McTominay is just a back-up. Bruno Fernandes would also feature.

We may see an adjustment in attack if Wout Weghorst is omitted, and Jadon Sancho brought in.

This would give United a more fluid front three of Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Antony. Alejandro Garnacho may have to settle for a place on the bench.

In: Malacia, Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Sancho

Out: Shaw, Dalot, Varane, Weghorst
