Manchester United’s Europa League quarter-final got off to the worst possible start.
A disastrous mix-up at the back gifted Sevilla an early goal in the Europa League quarter-final second leg.
Captain Harry Maguire gave the ball away on the edge of the box when trying to play out from the back.
Former Red Devils ace Gary Neville suggested that goalkeeper David de Gea was just as culpable.
Neville reacts
Reacting on social media, Gary Neville picked out goalkeeper David de Gea as contributing to the error.
He expressed that he disliked the choice to pass to Maguire when he was under pressure, when he had other options.
Neville wrote on Twitter: “Maguire will get battered but that pass from DeGea I wouldn’t like!”
It is our view that the blame should be shared. David de Gea had several other options, and chose the worst one, with Maguire surrounded by Sevilla players.
Whether Maguire called for it or not, De Gea should have used his own judgement to select a better option.
Playing out from the back has been an issue for De Gea all season. Minutes below he ploughed one upfield into the stands.
In the lead up to the game Erik ten Hag had praised De Gea as the ‘complete’ goalkeeper.
